Now is one of the most modern and populated airports with his new site Kastelli which is expected to receive 10 milion passengers every year. When the new airport is up and running, the existing airport at Heraklion will cease operations. The new airport will be placed to an already existing airbase and there will be new roads, water and sanitation facilities, all the settlements will have to be reallocated within the proposed runway (Archangelos, Roussochoria). The new road will connect the airport with the motorway along the north coast of Crete, in the neighbourhood of Chersonissos. After the opening, the distance from the city of Heraklion to the new airport will be approximately 40km.
